New running route near Naruse station, in Machida.
After a long, long time without running, I left today at 5:30 in the morning with a lot of motivation. Despite not having run for a long time, I have done many half marathons in the past (I ran 4 in a month in the Basque Country) and my habit was to always run about 20km when I did long runs. I have also continued doing a lot of cycling here in Japan, routes up to 200km, so I was confident in my endurance. I didn't have an idea of how many km to run today, but I did know that I wanted to run for about 2 hours and spend a little more time to take some photos because it was the first time I had run in this area. And what an area!
I started 1km from the Naruse station and crossed it to the north to reach the Onda River. This river has a track on both sides for running, pedaling or walking, with hundreds of cherry trees that have not yet bloomed (except for a few) but in spring they must make the path impressive.
The highlight of the route is the view of the mountains. At times you can see the Ōyama and Tanzawa mountain ranges (Tanzawa-Ōyama Quasi-National Park 丹沢大山国定公園) and even at one point Mt. Fuji behind. Unfortunately my camera does not do justice to the landscape, which is impressive. From the Machida station you can already see these mountains but on this route along the Onda River the views are much better.
Another highlight was Younji Temple, which was open from before 7:00 am (which is really surprising). Being placed on a hill it offers a great view not only of the mountains but of all of Machida.
I also managed to take photos of several black and white herons in the Onda River.
In short, a great area to run, pedal or walk in Machida.
Machida is a city of incredible contrast. Its main station is extremely busy and resembles large Tōkyō neighborhoods such as Shinjuku. On the other hand, it has very rural areas, where there is practically no one. These rural areas have great landscapes.
