Itinerary description

Running route, running from Narita to Chiba along the sidewalk of Route 51. National Route 51 in Japan connects the city of Chiba-shi from Chuo-ku to Mito in Ibaraki-ken. From Narita to Chiba, the road follows a similar path to the JR Narita train line. It passes along the borders of Shisui, Sakura, and Yotsukaido and enters Chiba-shi.

The route is 99% pedestrian-only, with a short 200-meter stretch of road along the shoulder, a wide shoulder that isn't at all dangerous. Thanks to the road signs, we can see how many kilometers we have left until we reach Chiba. My goal was to run to Chiba Central Station and return to Narita by train. The return train cost me 510 yen, about €3.80.

I really enjoyed the ride. Before reaching the station, I passed two tourist spots.

The first was Chibaken Gokoku Shrine It was established as the Chiba Prefectural Shokonsha Shrine by the will of Emperor Meiji and at the initiative of the prefecture's first governor, Kazushi Shibahara, in 1878. In July 1945, when most of Chiba City was burned during the war, the shrine building was burned down. After several constructions and reconstructions, the current shrine was completed in November 2020, giving it a modern and clean appearance. Enshrined are the souls of those who sacrificed their lives during overseas wars, such as the Boshin War, the Seinan War, the Sino-Japanese War, the Russo-Japanese War, World War I, the Manchurian Incident, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the Great East Asian War. There are also 14 deities enshrined.

The other place I passed by was the always beautiful Inohana-jo. The current building is a new castle that houses the Chiba City Museum of Local History, built on the ruins of the old Inohana Castle from the Sengoku period. From the outside, it's a beautiful castle with a stunning hilltop park, and inside, the museum has many interesting artifacts, such as samurai armor and katanas. Admission is also free, and its interior is on par with the more famous paid museums at Osaka and Odawara castles.

Inohana Castle, sometimes simply called Chiba Castle because of its location, is just a few minutes from Chiba Station, where I finish my run and end the route, returning by train to Narita.

I love these runs where, instead of going back and forth, I dedicate all my energy to going somewhere relatively far away. Today was 33 kilometers; after all, they're long distances, so I run at a conservative pace, and consequently, I was still very refreshed when I finished.

Acera ruta 51
