“A chimpanzee saved my life”
Interview with Rebeca Atencia, a veterinarian protecting chimpanzees in Africa with the Jane Goodall Institute
Biodiversity, crystal blue waters and clean air are what we find while doing an activity in nature to be a gift for the senses. On a mission to preserve these treasures, Wikiloc takes part in 1% for the Planet. Thanks to this initiative, we donate at least 1% of our global revenue to non-profit organizations which work to protect the planet.
If we have learned anything year after year, it is that it is necessary to continue to support those who take care of our environment. Also, we have learned that our every activity and every daily action must take care of nature and be a part of the preservation of the planet. In Wikiloc’s effort to do so, our implication with 1% for the Planet is one of the steps we take.
In the last few years, Wikiloc has supported numerous projects around the world through 1% for the Planet:
These organizations have been chosen by the Wikiloc team members. All these initiatives are making an impact on various places across the planet thanks to their efforts to create awareness and improve our environment. It is about non-profit organizations that, undoubtedly, are worth contributing to.
One of our main pillars is the preservation of nature, and as such, we encourage good practices and back up actions in favor of a healthy planet implementing solutions for its preservation. As decided by Wikiloc to be part of the 1% for the Planet initiative, the Wikiloc community in turn contributes to the preservation of the planet, since the contributions from subscriptions and the services available to organizations are all included in this 1% that we donate annually.
On the other hand, chasing after the same objective, Wikiloc has made plogging an activity available since 2020, a sport done outdoors centered around preserving nature. Doing sport while gathering trash we find along the way is a noble gesture and totally beneficial for everyone, since it improves the planet on which we live.
The 1% for the Planet initiative started off in 2002 at the hand of Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies. Every year, any non-profit organization that aims to preserve the planet can present their project and proposals to 1% for the Planet in order to receive funding to advance their work. On the other hand, companies and individuals members that make up the initiative can choose which projects they will destine the 1% they donate yearly. With this simple way of working, millions of dollars have been returned to the planet thanks to all the members of 1% for the Planet to date.
