Itinerary description

Everyone loves the 2.8km (return) walk to the top of Mt Ngungun (253m) as the views are superb, especially at sunrise and set. But if its not challenging enough, you can enhance the hike by returning via the western slope. Not only does it increase the walk to 4.5km but it adds a little more challange to your trek. Park on Fullerton Rd and take the normal "tourist track" to the amazing summit, ensuring you check out Daymans Cave along the way. Once you have taken in the views at the top of Ngungun, walk 30m down the south ridge and follow a faint trail takes you down to the western plateau. After skirting 300m along the edge of the plateau, you will find white ribbons which lead you down to the base of western cliff line. Take care on this section as its steep and there is a significant drop off to the side. From there, continue to follow the base 50m to the right (north) and take the first trail off to the left. This leads you to a forest road. Turn right along the road and after a km you arrive at the old quarry. Keep following that road and you will eventually return to the car park.
