Itinerary description

This trail has been described before. A second report may still be useful. Moreover, this report may count as a hint, that this trail can be done in heavy rain as well. But be careful! In case of snow on Guli pass things might be quite different.
I did this trail as part of a 6-days hike through Svanetia. The idea of this hike was inspired from the Transcaucasian Trail Project. Much practical information I found on the Caucasus Trekkingwebsite by Jozef Antala.
This trail is not technically difficult, except some way finding issues on the way up to Guli pass (the main direction is clear, though). This trail is strenuous, however, due to sheer length, ascent, and descent. Normally, the effort is said to be rewarded by stunning views on mount Ushba.
I cannot confirm the latter, since I did this trail in continuous and sometimes heavy rain. The weather forecast had predicted it, but the day before the weather forecast was wrong and the rain had stopped at noon. I hoped for the same this day. And anyway, I always could go back, if things would get nasty.
I spent the night at Mila guest house, which can be recommended. Breakfast was abundant, just right for me for a hard day. The weather forecast was correct, alas. And when things got nasty, I almost had reached Guli pass. So I moved on, and probably was the only one doing Guli pass this day. It was not so much fun, but it can be done.
Alas, Mount Ushba didn't show this day.

Hello, I want to walk between Mazeri and Mestia by following your route. How can I get to Mazeri from Batum or Mestia?

    Hi Mehmet,
sorry, I do not know this. You might need a taxi or try hitchiking.
I had walked from Etseri (Iskari) to Mazeri the day before (see https://de.wikiloc.com/routen-wandern/etseri-to-mazeri-29956304). Getting to Etseri is easy since it is situated near the main road to Mestia. I took a minibus from Zugdidi to Mestia and got off the minibus at the junction to Etseri.
    Best regards,
    Erik

Hey Erik! How did you find the taxi to skip the last few km down? We are staying at the same guesthouse in Mazeri, and would love to have the option to get the taxi on the way down to Mestia. Thanks

I have not used a taxi. It should be no problem to get a taxi to Mestia, though. You better make a pre-arrangement and phone the driver when you need it.
