Itinerary description

Lee Valley/Stort Valley - Dobb's Weir to Roydon loop

Starts and ends at Dobb's Weir car park in the Lee Valley Park. Follows the River Stort Navigation to Roydon Station and returns by a slightly different route. This is Version 1, the wet weather route if it is too muddy to continue all the way to Burles Farm on Roydon Footpath 3.

Intersection

There should be a Public Footpath sign by the road but it's missing. The public footpath goes through the lynch gate of the church and then to the left of the church, through the church yard. For further details see Essex Highways Public Right of Way Interactive Map and select aerial view.

After going through the church yard, there is a bridge over a stream with some waymark arrows.

Waypoint

The public right of way goes straight across the field through the sheds to the far left (Northwest) corner to join the farm track by the bridge over the stream but as of December 2021, it is obstructed and there is no way to get out of the field at the Northwest corner. It is possible to take a detour to the south along the farm track although this is an unauthorised diversion and the farm track is not a public right of way. For further details see Essex Highways Public Right of Way Interactive Map and select aerial view.

Waypoint

The public footpath Roydon Footpath 3 goes straight on here and continues to join Lows Hill Road at Burles Farm. The original intention of this route was to continue on Roydon FP 3 but the next section is very muddy in wet weather so you may prefer to turn right and join the Stort Valley Path by the river.

Intersection

The public footpath Roydon Footpath 3, goes straight on here (see previous waypoint) and continues to join Low Hill Road at Burles Farm but it is very muddy in wet weather. If Roydon FP 3 is impassable then it is possible to avoid this obstruction by turning right (west) along the edge of the field along the Stort Valley Way which is waymarked and leads to the path by the river.

Bridge

This is Feiildes Weir. At this point you can either: Cross the bridge over the River Lee Flood Relief Channel and the River Lee Navigation then return the start on the West (Hertfordshire) side of the river Lee Navigation or stay on the East (Essex) side of the River Lee and return to the start via a different footpath. There are signs on the bridge "No unauthorised Access" and it might appear that you can't go across the bridge but the signs refer to the gates either side of the bridge. There should be a Public Footpath sign or a waymark arrow here.
