Itinerary description
Starting in the charming village of Chalton, this trail largely follows the Sussex Border Path, offering sweeping views over rolling farmland and quiet valleys.
The route continues to Rowlands Castle, a peaceful spot that invites a short rest before heading south. As the path unfolds, occasional glimpses of the coastline hint at the journey’s end.
Eventually, we reached Thorney Island, a remote and slightly wild stretch bordered by tidal mudflats and salt marshes. The perimeter path loops around the island, offering striking sea views and a deep sense of solitude.
Although the island is part of a military area, public access is allowed via the coastal footpath—just be prepared for a few gates and MOD signs along the way. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to complete the full loop, as the east gate was closed, cutting the circuit short.
Overall, a pleasant and rewarding walk with varied scenery and a real sense of quiet escape.
