Ljubljana is the capital and the largest city in the state of Slovenia. It is located in the center of the country and between the Ljubljanica and Sava rivers, and has a population of 310,000.
Its historic and monumental heritage, as well as several cultural celebrations that take place throughout the year, including the International Summer Festival, make it a city that is both national and international tourist. Among its most representative monuments are the Cathedral, the Castle, the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation and the Bridge of Dragons, as well as the set of Modernist buildings. The architect Joži Plečnik signed many of the most outstanding buildings in the city.
The old city is made up of two districts: that of the town hall (which houses the main architectural works) and the neighborhood of the Knights of the Cross, where the Ursuline church, the building of the philharmonic society and Cankar house.
After the 1511 earthquake, Ljubljana was rebuilt according to the models of a Renaissance city, and after the earthquake of 1895, the city was again planned, this time following the patterns of the Art Nouveau style. Therefore, the architecture of the city is a mixture of styles. The large sectors built after the Second World War often include a personal touch by the Slovenian architect Joži Plečnik.
