near Ochopee, Florida (United States)

So we went out Wednesday, and on the way back, we passed over a large gator in shallow (2 to 3 ft) water and got pictures of him, and he never moved. So after a while, we got comfortable floating over the top of him because we thought he was probably dead. He looked dead, but his eyes were open, but things die with their eyes open all the time. I had never seen a gator behave like that before. We didn't poke him because that's against state rules, and we video what we do, so we left him.

We reported it to the State, and one of the ladies thought it just might be alive, so we went out with a 40 ft rope and an anchor to wake it up or drag the corpse. And... no gator. The frightening thing is that means we were hovering on top of a huge, fat gator in shallow water for a long time a few days before. Cool!

On top of that, on the way out, a small (4 to 5 ft) manatee swam past us in about 2 to 3 ft of water. We turned to follow it to get video and must have passed over mom, who proceeded to lift the front of the canoe as she took off. (some video in View more). There's some big stuff in that shallow water. Never a dull day.
