They have new procedures at the East River launch - you have to call ahead to 239-695-4593 for reservations. There's a lock on the gate similar to a very heavy-duty bike lock where you have to dial in a four-digit number that you get during the phone call. Bring your reading glasses and if it's dark, a good light. Lock the gate behind you and get an envelope from the box and put your money into it (fees vary) and put it into the "Iron Ranger" (green metal box), and put your receipt on your dashboard.
Launch into a 15-acre lake with a hard-to-find outlet hidden at the southeast corner into a short (400'±) winding tunnel and enter a long (half a mile) lake that's about 150 ft. wide. Enter another tunnel, and in about 500 ft, you'll hit a small wide opening where you'll have the urge to go straight. That's the way to Wrong Way Lake because the East River entrance is a hidden hard left turn (the right way)as you enter the wide spot. The East River is a long paddle down to Fakahatchee Bay and back, but if you go the wrong way (like we did today), you'll end up in a lake/marsh system that's very accessible when the water level is up. Check out the View More tab for pictures and videos.
Only one gator this trip. Usually, there's more. Annoying.
