near Goodland, Florida (United States)
We went out of the Goodland Marina and looped around Coon Key and then back around Jackfish Island. The tide was shallow, and we went down Coon Key pass in the dark out to the west side of Coon Key. The wind was about 5 to 10 mph from the NE. We were scoping out possible overnight campsites for paddlers along the Florida Circumnavigational Paddling Trail.
We've done this paddle before in the daytime, but this is the first time we actually could see the Coon Key Light that appears on navigation maps off in the distance. Boat traffic was pretty heavy, and no one slowed down for paddlers, so be careful of wakes. One boater saw us paddling in the dark because we had headlamps on and came over to see if we were OK.
There was plenty of camping area on Jackfish Key. The west side looked like there was room enough to hold an infantry platoon.
