near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina (United States)

Carolina Yacht Club to Masonboro Inlet sea buoy. Overview: This is the first major inlet south of Beaufort and is popular with sportfishermen. It is an uncomplicated entrance protected by jetties on both sides and has good depths within.

Cautions and hazards: There are no particular difficulties with this inlet, although a southeasterly wind can cause difficult conditions for smaller boats.

Navigation: From the sea buoy, the jetties lie to the northwest and are unmarked. Once inside, if you are headed to Wrightsville Beach, bear to starboard at green and red daybeacon “WC” and then turn to port at Motts Channel a bit farther up. If Masonboro is your destination, continue straight ahead.

ICW connection: ICW Mile 285 lies straight ahead past Shinn Creek after entering.

Nearest recommended inlets: Masonboro is a good inlet for faster boats or for early-rising sailors or trawler skippers wanting to get off the ICW to or from Beaufort, NC, which is just under 65 nm to the northeast. Carolina Beach Inlet is 6 nm to the south, but a wiser and quicker course is to continue on the ICW from Masonboro, enter the Cape Fear River through Snows Cut, catch the outgoing tide and proceed to Southport (or upriver to Wilmington).
