DETAILED POST FOLLOWING THE LINK BELOW (click View More)
A fantastic intermediate level hike that combines many features of other UAE hikes: bouldering, beautiful wadi walk, some balconies, and narrow paths around the mountain edge, awesome plateaus, mountain villages.
Definitely not a beginner's hike and a good level of fitness is needed. It is a 13km hike and you need a full-day of daylight to complete it without rushing.

Thank you for sharing this trail.. Would you recommend starting this at 5am? How many liters of water do you need to bring in this hike? In this weather.. many thanks!

  • Photo of Ausra Osi

    Ausra Osi Nov 7, 2020

Hey Danielle, we started before 8am and were going at a speed of 2.2km per hour according to wikiloc. Therefore, 5 am is a bit early, it will still be dark. But it is a good idea to go with the sunrise. 4 liters of water should be enough for this hike. I had 2liters of water and 1 liter of pocari sweat, and finished it all by the time we got back. I would advise 4 liters for sure. I have also posted more about this hike on my blog, you can check if you need more details at roadreel. com

    Thanks.

The route was well explained many thanks

If you hike through hidden oasis and continue to the right side of Wadi you will end in the same way down of wadi Shah

Thanks for uploading the hike with plenty useful information

This looks amazing Ausra! and thanks for the details.. wondering if you would recommend camping a night before the hike? Safe enough?

    Thank you again ☺️

    Ausra Osi Dec 9, 2020

Hi Sudhendu, you can't camp a night before the hike as it starts next to the jebel jais road, and it's not a great place to camp (not sure if it's even allowed). But I might be wrong. You would have to camp somewhere in the wadi. People usually camp on the mountain. So they do half hike in the afternoon and then half hike in the morning.

Hi Ausra, planning to take this trail. Was wondering if advanced scrambling was required. Does donkey trail become very narrow that you can to stick to wall and walk? Or jump across the chasm? I am beginner intermediate level

  • Photo of Ausra Osi

    Ausra Osi Dec 22, 2020

Hi Shanz, there is no advanced scrambling. Donkey path is wide enough to follow comfortably. You will not need to be leaning into the rock to pass it. Even donkeys use it:) it is challenging as ita long hike though and going down will make your legs suffer a bit, as there will some boulders in the wadi, so sure you will fwel you hiked:)

    Hi ausra osi

To do this whether we need to the following or not required
    1) climb upon Boulder more than 4 feet

    2) cross water ways

    3) balcony path if so how we need to approach the balcony path

Or just need to walk on rough terrain

Do you had mobile network thought out the loop

  • Photo of Ausra Osi

    Ausra Osi Jan 13, 2021

    Hi Meer,

please check my blog post for complete details about this hike:
    https://www.theroadreel.com/wadi-shah-hike-rasalkhaimah-uae/

    1) I cannot remember any huge boulders that would be a problem to pass except one spot I mentioned as a little more challenging, as we came to it following the right side after the before mentioned balcony (you can reach around by taking left side after that balcony).
    2) no, at least not if it hasn't rained yet
    3) which balcony path are you talking about? if that's the first balcony i mentioned in my post, it is easy, nothing complicated there, it not high, you just climb up. It is a really nice spot for pictures.

There is poor signal in the wadi, but good on the mountain.

    Hi Ausra,
Looks like this one is next on my to-do list :) and planning to go this Friday, as usual starting from 6am. I am assuming this one has less of a steep decline in comparison to leopard canyon, correct?
I wanted to ask what % of the hike is sun-exposed, considering we will start at 6am? Just want to be prepared with adequate sun protection if required.
    Regards,
    Mayur

  • Photo of Ausra Osi

    Ausra Osi Jan 18, 2021

Hi Mayur, a good choice, it is an amazing hike. The decline is steep enough to get to your knees I have to say. There will some level donkey path walk as soon as you start descending from the second village. But later you will enter the wadi and it is quite steep going down through the boulders. But it is okay, there are no extreme drops or anything like that.
For the sunscreen, yes take it with you as the trail is exposed to the sun probably at least 60-70percent of the time, especially when on the mountain, no shadow at all (only under the tree which is only few there).

Hello Buddies, please help me to know what could I expect in terms of body ache and pain after completion of Wadi Shah.
One of my mate completed it recently and has bit of pain in knees.
I would definitely be more than happy to know, from the experienced hiker what their body was like in 2 to 3 days of hiking. Awaiting!

  • Photo of Ausra Osi

    Ausra Osi Jan 24, 2021

Hi Binu, descending this trail can be really heavy on your joints, so no surprise your friend feels it after the hike. Me personally, I felt some pain in the knees too while descending (I always do in longer hikes, coming down is my least favorite and most painful part). Usually, if you rest well, the next day you should feel okay, taken you don't have any medical issues with your knees. Everyone is different, and the body response is different. Try using trekking poles, those will help to reduce the load on joints.

Due to unexpected delays started this hike at afternoon by 12😭😭 , Since full loop would take long hours first planned to do till half and return but ended up doing full loop.
After summit,Ausra it was just your trail and a head lamp🙏🏻. After 4 hours head lamp was also dead ! it’s just trail 🤪 which guided us to the parking !(by 12.00am)
Carry more than 3 liters of water.
    Power bank
And torch/headlamp if you end up like us 🤪

Are there any rock climbing skills required or tools? Is it technically easier than Leopard Canyon?

  • Photo of Ausra Osi

    Ausra Osi Feb 13, 2021

It is easier than Leopard Canyon because there are no vertical walls. There is a lot of bouldering involved but not technical and no ropes required. However hike is long, just to bear in mind

Is it really moderate? Maybe for you being an expert hiker but in general i consider it be difficult

  • Photo of Ausra Osi

    Ausra Osi Nov 12, 2021

Yes, khayralla52, it is between moderate to difficult, it all depends on fitness level. Technically, it is moderate level, but because it is quite a long hike with significant elevation gain and loss, it can be difficult for some people.

  • Photo of khayralla52

    khayralla52 Nov 13, 2021

Yes fully agree with you now, when we leave notes we try to be realistic as much as possible & shouldn't be based on ourselves capabilities mainly for instance for me & other 5 members was moderate but 3 other members of the group couldn't comple to the top,
Your explanation is very well describes the level.

  • Photo of Ausra Osi

    Ausra Osi Feb 11, 2022

Hi Fazoo, moving time is actually the time when we hiked- so this is the time required to complete full loop. However, we stopped a lot along the way, rested, took pictures, etc, so in total we spent 10 hours there, but 5 hours was the time we actually walked.

  • Photo of Ausra Osi

    Ausra Osi Feb 18, 2022

Victor, I don't think this trail is suitable at night, it is not well established, lots of boulders, have to always lookout for cairns, and it's not straightforward, and I personally wouldn't do it at night.
