near Z̧anḩah, Fujairah (United Arab Emirates)

UPDATE (14/12/2021) - Some hikers reported that there is military checking and they are not allowing people to proceed. Some are having no issues as well. So it depends on the day you go, if military is there, they wont let you pass the area.

Wadi Ghub - Rainbow Valley (Spectrum Hike) Full Loop 15km

This is another beautiful trail that became popular recently. Mainly because of the layered colored rock formation - so called Rainbow valley / Spectrum.

Located in Ghub (Fujairah Emirate) on the way in RAK - Dibba road. Cars (including sedan) can reach nearby the trail easily. Park at the empty space 25.577141897459178, 56.18519758915695 or on the road side but do not block the road.

The trail can be spitted in to Three (3):

1- Till the Spectrum area and come back (Easy level) 4km total
2- Till the Dry waterfall and come back (Moderate level) 8km total
3- Summit at Mussandum Hajjar mountain border - Full loop (Moderate to Difficult level) 15km total

The Full Loop Trail is Moderate to Difficult level (Intermediate +) Because:

- Bouldering involved at multiple points
- No proper trail in various areas
- Slippery boulders
- Loose gravel
- Sudden elevation gain
- Descending through wadi where loose rocks, ridges
- Less shade / More exposed to sun

Do the full loop at own risk and with a group only.

1- Till the spectrum (Easy Level) 4km total
If you are fascinated with the pictures and want to visit the place but still looking for an easy trail, well then this is the one for you. Park your can and walk next to the farm / village (on your left). Just keep on walking till you see the military camera area. You will then have to enter the wadi and continue walking. After walking about 2km, you will reach The multi colored layered rock formation so called "Spectrum" area - the highlight of the trail. Take as many photos as you want and come back through the same way and make it a 4km easy hike!

2- Till the Dry water fall (Moderate Level) 8km total
Even though the trail became popular because of the spectrum point, there are much more beautiful to witness afterwards. After passing the spectrum point, just keep on waking through the wadi. At some points you may have to do little bouldering (depends on your skill). You will get rewarded with amazing landscape views for your hard work. You can do the trail till the dry water fall area (about 4km) and then come back. Total 8km moderate level hike.

2- Till Mussandum Hajjar Mountain Summit Point (Moderate+) 15km total
Well, the beautiful areas / highlights of the trail has already covered. But if you are looking for a long hike with some extra load on your knees then go ahead for the full loop. You have to go right from the dry waterfall area and then it will start gaining elevation. Take proper breaks in between and drink enough water. Finally you will reach the 1000m+ summit point where you can see Dibba (Oman side) and Mussandum Hajjar mountains. When we were at the summit point it was full of low clouds / fog and was a unique memorable experience.

Coming back is the toughest part of the trail. You have to come back through the wadi, where there is no proper trail, full of loose rocks and rubble, sudden drops and ridges, moreover its completely exposed to sun. You will have to do bit of scrambling and to use your hiking poles / both of your hands at various points. Its really challenging and adventurous. You will eventually reach the dry waterfall area where you took right to go up. You can also come back from the summit point through the same way you climbed up - i believe that will be "relatively" easy.

Overall its a nice challenging hike. Be prepared with 3-4 litres of water, electrolytes, hiking poles, hat etc. if you are planning the full loop. Bouldering and scrambling is assured but no ropes are required.

Location : Wadi Ghub (RAK – Dibba road)
Parking : 25.577141897459178, 56.18519758915695 (sedan car is accessible)
Difficulty : Easy (4km) / Moderate (8km) / Moderate + (15km)
Highlight : Layered multicolored rock formation - so called Rainbow valley / Spectrum

Note the waypoints and read their description. Please reach out for any further info / clarifications

We hiked this trail in September 2020 with Adventure Extreme group and it was one of my challenging hikes due to Season, Distance, Temperature and Elevation. Due care and preparation should be taken.

Did it few days ago, awesome trail. Bit tricky going down coz of loose rocks and steep terrain but guess thats why it was rated difficult... Great work Muhasin

Done this trail yesterday but only covers 7km. Did a bit of detour which we climbed mountain instead of just following the flat surface after the spectrum area just for some difficulty since we are not doing the full loop then back to the flat surface and continue the trail. It was beautiful hike. Saw snake on our way back and lots of goats.

I did the trail towards the end of April and it starts to get hit by 11 am. Pack at least three liters of water. Look out for a white goat, very friendly and would love to have breakfast with you followed by a walk in the wadi. 😊

Hi Muhasin. May I know which in your pictures is the dry waterfall? Is there no bouldering required if we only go till the spectrum? I have kids with me and it's our first hike in UAE, we chose to follow your trail for our first experience. 😁

    Hello there,

The last photo is the dry waterfall area (which I took while coming back)

You don't have to do any bouldering if you go till spectrum (just 2km walk)

With kids you can go upto Spectrum without any issue, but if you want to move further till the waterfall, then Bouldering is a must..

Hi Muhasin, just want to know if the trail is easy to follow without a guide.. we are planning to try it on Nov.

    Muhasin Pallikkal Oct 5, 2021

    Hi Camille

The trail is easy to follow. If you read the description, the trail can be categorised as three.. you can do the 8km version without any guide. But the full loop is little bit difficult because of the sudden drops and slight bouldering..(However, if you are an experienced hiker, you can do that one as well)

If you need more assistance please let me know..
You can message me on ig / WhatsApp

Hello! We want to do this hike, may I know if we do the 8K would we run into the check point?

  • Photo of Muhasin Pallikkal

    Muhasin Pallikkal Jan 26, 2022

    Hello Haya,

If you are talking about Military checking then it's in the beginning (where there is the camera)

Some people are stopped / returned by Military, some are still going there without any issues..

So it's all about your luck..

  • Sajjad Mamdani Dec 10, 2022

Salaams Muhasin, planning to do the short version (perhaps only 3-4kms one way) to the Rainbow View point. Is the trail head accessible by small vehicle ?? Also any pointers ??
