In general, the track follows the Via Appia Antica loosely as it's usually not possible to hike the original route anymore. In large part because the old road has been upgraded over the centuries and is now a highway in some section or a main provincial road where cars are speeding by you. In other sections, the road is simply gone. Instead, I've searched for nice roads, a little away from any main roads where there is a lot less traffic (or none at all), while trying to stay true to the original road where possible.
In this stage of the Via Appia, it seems that most of the original road has been upgraded and is now the provincial road. Although the area is quite remote and there will not be that much traffic, I have tried to find an alternative where possible and logical.
This stage starts on the town square of Lacedonia. In less than 1 km, you will leave the Strada Statale SS303 and follow an unpaved road for the next 3 km, but then you're back on the SS303.
During the next 4 km, you will be on or close to the SS303. Where possible, there is a shortcut to take you away from the road, but there is limited option on this stretch.
When your odometer shows 8 km, you arrive in the town called Calli and pass by a small supermarket (see waypoint).
Continue to follow the SS303 and after another 2 km, you will come into Bisaccia Nuova which has a very modern looking church. Pass through the town where you will leave the SS303 for a while to take a dirt road through the fields. This will bring you to the highest point of the day as your odometer will read almost 14km. Around here there are plenty of wind turbines again.
You continue to follow small roads through the fields until your odometer reaches 21 km. At this point you come back to the SS303 as you pass by a regular looking church in the town of Rione Forche.
When your odometer reaches 24 km, you have the option to detour from the indicated trail (see waypoint) for 2 locations (regular B&B or AirBnB) that are located south of the trail.
If you continue on the indicated track, you will come into Borgo Le Traverne where this another B&B, a supermarket, a vending machine and suggested stealth camping site. As this is a very small town, don't expect too much and certainly don't expect the supermarket to be open at all hours (usually closed between 12 and 4/5pm).
Below are some contact details of the mentioned B&B locations. I've not tried any of them, so I can't speak towards their quality.
