This is a walk that I did with the An Oige Group on 28 August 2011, to climb the Sugarloaf and from there to Lobawn and down to the village of Donard. I should explain that there are 450 hills or mountains in the world called Sugar Loaf or Sugarloaf, and 5 of these are in Ireland, with 3 in Wicklow. Our Sugarloaf is the one in West Wicklow, as distinct from the Great Sugar Loaf.We went by the special bus to Donard and from there to the start of the walk about 4km down a country road. The climb from there to the top of the Sugarloaf is steep, but not a difficult surface. The view from the top is spectacular. Having had our sandwich here, we then walked along bogland to the top of Lobawn, which is equally impressive. The descent from Lobawn is through pleasant woodlands and farmlands to the point marked Farm, where we joined a country road back to Donard. The owner of the farm does not object to conscientious hikers passing through his land but likes to be told in advance if a large group plans a hike. Total route is just under 11km, but it could be made circular by walking the 4km from Donard to the starting point.
