Tour of the Trans Catalina Trail, a path that crosses the island of Santa Catalina, in California (United States).

The island, which is 194 square kilometers in area, is part of the Santa Bárbara Islands Archipelago, also known as the North Islands or Channel Islands, on the coast of Baja California del Sur, and is located approximately 35 km away. southwest of Los Angeles.

One of the singularities of the place is that it offers the possibility of looking closely at an important population of bison (about 150), which graze freely in the hills and valleys of the interior of the island.

These animals, in fact are not native to Santa Catalina, but come from a group of 14 copies that was taken there, in 1924, for the filming of the film "The Vanishing American", and at the end of the shooting their owners opted for leave them free, since it was less expensive than moving them back to their places of origin.

The Trans Catalina Trail (TCT) is a path traced to travel the island from end to end, from Avalon to Starlight Beach, with a total of 37.2 miles (about 60 km.), To which it is necessary to add 9 more miles to return to Two Harbors, where you can take a boat or a bus back to Avalon. The complete tour can be done in three or four stages, which could be broken down as follows:

First day: Avalon to Black Jack Campround - 15 miles
Second day: Black Jack Campround to Two Harbors - 12.5 miles
Third day: Two Harbors to Starlight Beach (official end of the trail) via Parson's Landing, and return to Parson's Landing - 15 miles
Fourth day: Parson's Landing back to Two Harbors - 6.5 miles

This time we have traveled a little more than the planned route for the first stage: from the town of Avalon, the main urban center of the island (3,728 inhabitants), to the airport, following in its initial section the variant of a minor path called Hermit Gulch Trail, which is more direct and slightly shortens the official layout, and runs through a mountain trail, instead of the wide track for vehicles that uses the TCT in its first miles.

The layout of the path does not offer any technical difficulty, but the terrain is very arid, with very few shadows, and when the sun squeezes you appreciate the sea breeze that runs in the high areas of the island.

To walk in the TCT you must register with the Catalina Island Conservancy http://www.catalinaconservancy.org/index.php?s=visit&p=hike_the_trans_catalina_trail. Registration can be done online and is free.

In the same place you can download a complete map, in pdf format, and also a mobile application, which can be very useful, since in some sections the path is not correctly signaled, or the signaling is insufficient or confusing.

Precisely, as a consequence of this defective signaling, in the itinerary that we follow (and that is reflected in the GPS route included in this review), we left the path between kilometer 8.3 and 9.3, and this forced us to make a short cross country section, to be able to recover the correct path.
