near Echternach, Echternach (Lëtzebuerg)

This is a very cool trail. The area around Echternach and Irrel is known for its bizarre rock formations, and the Felsenweg showcases some of its best. There are, in fact, several Felsenwege, numbered one to six, providing hiking fun for several weeks.

This trail is technically not difficult, but it is a fairly tough hike (and rated 'hard' by some guides). With more than 21 km it is rather long , and continues with much up and down all the way. To cut it short would be a shame, as the interest keeps up till the very end. We therefore recommend to do it in its full length and glory. Take provisions and plan for the whole day.

One is, in any case, never tempted to speed along, as we have been on few hikes in the Eifel and Ardennes with so many photo opportunities - especially in autumn, with its colorful foliage. In summer, you may stop to observe rock climbers on some of the vertical walls and boulders.

Some of the trail's attractions incude: The Liborius Chapel with its wonderful view across Echternach, the Falkenlay (lay meaning rock), the castle of Weilerbach, the Geierslay, the Halsbaach valley, the Hohllay with its amphitheatre and caves, the Labyrinth, and the Wolfsschlucht (wolf's canyon).

The trail is generally well signposted and laid out. Almost all ascents and descents are aided by stone stairs, and some of the cliffs can be reached via iron ladders.

The absolute elevation of the trail is not very high - 162 meters the lowest point and 344 meters the highest. But you will cover a total of 650 meter elevation gain and loss during the hike, and your knees will notice it unless you regularly do this kind of stuff.

The first part of the trail is in Germany, the second part in Luxembourg ('DeLuxe'). On a Saturday in November, we were virtually alone on the German part, while the afternoon in Luxembourg was (justifiably) busy - but only around its main attractions.

There are several points where one can park the car and start the hike. Echternach is still the obvious trailhead because of its many cafes and restaurants. In summer, the Museum-cafe at Schloß Weilerbach would be a welcome rest-stop. Note our free trailhead parking in a residential street (other parking in Echternach may be time-limited).

Langer, aber ausgesprochen schöner Trail. Schöne Ausblicke, bizarre Felsenformationen.

    Gut beschildert.

Hello, in two weeks time, I will travel to Luxembourg to visit the city and do a trekking. I have seen your route in wikiloc and it seems very interesting. Is it complicated to follow? I will carry the GPS but I wanted to know if the road and the orientation were good.
I will spend a night in Ethernach.

    Thanks for sharing

HI, the trail is well signposted. If you take - in addition . our GPS coordinates you will surely not get lost. The trail is very clear, even if at times rugged. Start early, as this is a rather long trail with a lot of up and down.

    Happy hiking!

I loved it, I made the complete tour, following its track and I fell in love with the route.
I am from Mallorca and the temperatures on the island are very high, and in Luxembourg it was 22 degrees, also for more than half the way it rained and I almost did not get wet, incredible.
The journey through the rocks and caves, dreamy. Thank you very much for sharing this magnificent route through this wonderful fairytale country.
    regards
