near White Hill Estates, Utah (United States)

We started at Neff's Canyon trailhead, and then veered southwest, up the rocky north face of Mount Olympus. As we approached the north summit, the rain and lightning started. We dropped down to the canyon between the north and south summits. We bushwhacked for about 1 1/2 miles down the canyon until we reached the traditional trail to the south summit of Mount Olympus. In retrospect, we should've gone up the canyon and climbed up the south summit, and then taken the regular trail down.

The bushwhack was miserable. Thick scrub oak, stinging nettles and cockle-burrs everywhere. Lots of big boulders and drops. Two rattle snakes were also encountered.

Next time, we'll traverse from the north to the south peak, and take the regular trail down.

The beginning of the hike, just beyond the Neff's Canyon parking lot. The pile of boulders on the left was a sign of things to come. https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/the-north-face-of-mt-olympus-ut-3120485/photo-1302107

Much of the "trail" was just following washes and gullies. The dark red trail is all sharp and slippery. We climbed the boulders on the left side. https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/the-north-face-of-mt-olympus-ut-3120485/photo-1302110

We are climbing eastward, up the spine, towards the north summit. Very rocky, with lots of up and down.

The views are amazing, but definitely not for the acrophobics out there. https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/the-north-face-of-mt-olympus-ut-3120485/photo-1302111

Just below the north summit, looking towards the south summit, which is the most frequent hike up Mt. Olympus. https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/the-north-face-of-mt-olympus-ut-3120485/photo-1302112

The valley between the north and south summits. This is looking up the cliffs to the south summit. https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/the-north-face-of-mt-olympus-ut-3120485/photo-1302113

The long valley downwards between the two summits. There is no trail. We bushwhacked through dense scrub oak, stinging, nettles, and lots of large boulders. Occasionally, we could get up on the side and follow a rocky "path" until it ended, and we had to drop back into the brush.

We also encountered two rattlesnakes, who seemed annoyed that we were there.

I would discourage anyone from going down this canyon. Instead, drop off the north summit, and bushwhack behind the south summit until you reach the well traveled Olympus trail. The descent will be easy. https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/the-north-face-of-mt-olympus-ut-3120485/photo-1302114
