near Alfriston, England (United Kingdom)

The area around Alfriston is its own world, packed with fascinating landscape features and, in summer, nice places to stop for lunch and tea. This walk starts at Wilmington Long Man car park, which fills up easily. If you can't park there, go down the road towards Littlington where it intersects the South Downs Way where you'll find a small car park. If that's full, drive to Alfriston and park.

Assuming you start at Wilmington, you'll see the ruins of the old Priory, and straight ahead of you the Long Man. A short but steep climb to the left of the monument takes you to towards the top of Windover Hill (on breezy days you'll see crows diving and playing in the wind here), where you can explore some of the Bronze Age burial mounds (https://ancientmonuments.uk/112843-pair-of-bowl-barrows-on-windover-hill-170m-south-of-the-long-man-long-man#.YIXCB5AzZ3g) before descending into the picturesque village of Alfriston, where you'll find plenty of tea shops and places to buy food. A gentle walk along the river takes you back to Wilmington.
