This is an alternative trail that bypasses the Marienbruecke (closed for renovation until at least Fall 2022).
Starting from the Tegelbahn (cablecar) parking lot we walked to the Schloss Neuschwanstein, then circled to the back and walked down to the river below and behind the Mariebruecke.
Having forded the river just by the flood barrier, we took the (very) steep trail up the mountainside and ended up at the east side of the bridge. A few minutes more going up brought us to the panoramic platform above the castle.
Leaving Neuschwanstein behind, we began the long trek up to the Tegelbahn mountain station.
At the midway fork we chose the south-eastern, direct path to the summit. Please be advised that this trail, albeit much more scenic than the other, has some pretty dangerous stretches with vertical drops on both sides and a couple of points where actual climbing is required.
Shortly before the 5th hour of hiking (the duration listed above is wrong) we reached the Tegelbahn station, had a drink and took the cablecar down (no point walking down in the midsummer heat).
