If we had something between our eyes to do during our trip to Vietnam, it was a good trek through the valleys of Sa Pa and the climb to the highest mountain in Indochina: Phan Xi Păng (Fansipan) (3,143 m). We were anxious to find out how the weather would respect us in the rainy season and immersed in a valley that is usually cloudy, discharging rain or thick fog. Well there was no better time and better days to enjoy the beautiful valley of Sa Pa. Two days together with Hmong families and in the company of more people willing to wear a little the sole. With some we would end up having great moments of laughter and not forgetting! To know Sa Pa!

Sa Pa (Sapa) - Mao Lenh Family Homestay - Sử Pán

First of the two days of trekking that would give us our beautiful stay in Sa Pa. Undoubtedly, one of the most anticipated days of our trip to Vietnam. Valleys and mountains, rice fields, views and panoramas that promised in photography. It looks like a painting ... we thought! It will all be true? Let's check it! We started the excursion!

START:

We arrived in Sa Pa, coming from Hanoi, on a sleeping bus, enough to curse one night. It is a bus in which the seats are almost horizontal, in order to be able to travel while sleeping. It was 5:30 and we had just arrived in Sa Pa, where we left the bus to wait for the Hmong women who would come for us. With us, more people in a similar situation! After a long time of waiting, they come to pick us up to take us to breakfast, where we began to make conversation with the companions with whom we would share the trekking: Álvaro, Andrea, Carlos, Amparo, Raúl and Irene. With the latter we would spend great moments during our stay in Sa Pa! The Hmong women were already there, ready to teach us all the secrets of the valley, its people and a way of life that gives a lot to think, especially in the great luck we have to enjoy almost anything. A very special greeting to Mao, "boss" of the expedition and Mu, our guide through the valley.

DESCRIPTION:

After a good breakfast, we started the route leaving the village of Sa Pa, all behind Mu, Hmong woman who would teach us the area. Mu, in flip flops, and the rest, as best we could get dressed to face two days of intense hiking.

We follow a couple of detours to leave the town of Sa Pa. The second detour will leave us on the path to start, a path that is already discerning from the first steps!

The first part of the route advances in ascent, quite demanding, but that we are surpassing without too many problems. The path narrows and there are completely muddy areas, fruit of the last rains. All in single file, including Mu, another woman who carried a basket backpack and two more girls who did not hesitate to accompany us during the route, making us various crafts with all kinds of nature. Without a doubt, some artists!

As we gain altitude, we cross several fields. The first one we will see will be a green tea field, very beautiful! We paid attention not to slip, since the path was quite muddy.

We continue the route following another detour, at which point several people join the trekking: a couple from Ireland and two girls from Egypt. A multicultural trekking!

We continue climbing, getting a good perspective of Sa Pa, between clouds, because the day was quite cloudy. We cross a small bridge to save the route of one of the many streams that are seen in this time.

After crossing the bridge, we came to an area of cornfields. The path opens up and the views are better. The day lightens at times and the amplitude of the valley begins to be noticed. We keep going up!

We have already traveled almost 3 kilometers and reached the highest point of it. The path always without loss and very comfortable to follow. Pity that the day was overcast and that we barely had any gap in the clouds to see the valley. However, being able to be better, the views are fantastic! Several photos from a perfect natural viewpoint!

After stopping at the highest point of the route, we begin to descend. Most of the remaining route would be in decline, so it would not take too much physical demand.

We begin to descend towards the valley and the day is clearing, which allows us to obtain a beautiful panoramic view. The path is very beautiful, although we must pay special attention not to slip in wet areas.

Soon we arrived at the vicinity of a small lagoon of green tones, very beautiful. We continue enjoying a nice day of trekking, while we chat with Álvaro and Andrea, Chilean travelers willing to travel the world for a year and a half!

The rain is respecting us and we continue descending until we reach the detour through which we will continue on a wider and clearer path, also more comfortable to follow.

At 6 kilometers and a half, we reach the detour that goes to a kind of viewpoint. A natural overhang on the valley. Advised by Mu, we do not hesitate to take this detour and access the natural viewpoint over the valley. The day had cleared enough to begin to contemplate the valley in all its magnitude. Rice fields, valleys, rivers and mountains! Sa Pa in pure state!

We retraced to the original path and continued the route. We are in more populated areas and we see all kinds of buildings. We follow another detour.

During the route, we witness several waterfalls, some prettier and bigger than others! Without a doubt, the water runs, and that's nature!

We follow the route and meet again with another outgoing. It does not offer great views of the valley, but is surrounded by rice fields. It is spectacular the large amount of green tones that the valley acquires when the rice fields are in good season!

We continue on a comfortable path and arrive at one of the moments of the day, without a doubt. The fact of knowing and visiting the house where Mu lives was something that, unintentionally, makes you reconsider and value what we really have. They are really hard conditions, very different and without any comfort, at all. They are moments in which you really travel, and it was a moment in which we all stop to think that we are very lucky ... I'm sure!

After the visit to the house of Mu, we continue the route overlooking another waterfall. We continue on a comfortable path with a spectacular day, ideal for walking!

It is becoming less and we continue descending, now along several curves in the same path. Motorcycles circulate freely around here, so we take special care when crossing them. We spot another waterfall!

Another waterfall that we found, in an area full of guest houses. The area is more populated and there is a greater atmosphere.

We have already lost most of the unevenness and we came to another detour. We are in full town and is already visible, in the distance, our Homestay, where we will spend the night. The views are still beautiful and the day accompanies!

We have already left the main path and return to a narrower path. Only a little less than a kilometer is left and we are advancing between rice fields and fields.

After more than 11 kilometers, we arrive at Mao Lenh Family Homestay, located in Sử Pán, the place where we will spend the night and where we conclude the first day of trekking.

Our stay at Mao Lenh Family Homestay was fantastic! We were not going with any idea made, not knowing what we were going to find, and even more so after visiting Mu's house. And the truth is that, when we arrived, we realized that we were going to sleep great, even if there were moments of panic in one of the members of the expedition. We were able to shower, we dined very well, we enjoyed and laughed at a unique table together with Raúl and Irene, we slept under a mosquito net and a roof and woke up without any kind of fright. For more details, you have to go and live it. A different, fun and we will always remember.

CONCLUSION:

A great day to walk. A first day of trekking with a little bit of everything! Height, slope and a view of scandal to go savoring during the day. We had a perfect company and we realized how lucky we are. A day living closely the customs and way of life of the Hmong ethnic group. One of the days that we remember the best and most of our trip to Vietnam! Highly recommended!

Sử Pán - Mao Lenh Family Homestay - Cau May Waterfall - Hầu Thào

Second day of trekking through the Valley of Sa Pa! If the first day was exceptional, the second also promised similar sensations. Again with Mu as a guide for the area and a nice route ahead. We start!

START:

After the fun night we spent, it was time to get up and start the day. First, a very rich breakfast, prepared by the local people who accompanied us throughout the adventure. Then, preparing backpacks and starting the activity, together with the companions with whom we had spent the night, except Carlos and Amparo, who returned from a trip sooner and had to return to Sa Pa before. We will start the route in the Mao Lenh Family Homestay itself.

DESCRIPTION:

The first steps of the route we take along a narrow path between fields and rice fields.

The day promised hot. It's early and the sun is already strong, so maximum sun protection, water and a hat!

Following a detour, we reach a more populated area than the area where we sleep. It's Monday and the activity is noticed. There are many people in the streets and children scampering with their backpacks.

We leave the town behind and visit a small waterfall, very beautiful! We continue the route by comfortable path and in slight ascent.

We crossed a wooden bridge, carefully, and followed a detour to the left to continue on a good course. Mu is the first and the heat is noticeable ...

From here, the route becomes somewhat more demanding, gaining in beauty and tranquility. The wide path of the village gives way to a narrow path that will be strained in a beautiful bamboo forest. Undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful places that we will spend in our trekking through Sa Pa.

The forest is small and we leave it following several detours, in zig-zag mode. The height and the sunny day allows us to have a nice panoramic view of the valley!

We leave behind the bamboo forest and reach a populated area, where we find a small waterfall. They are places of great activity, small shops and many people on the street.

We continue another detour to leave the village and continue our route, now along a clear and dark path, without any difficulty.

We are at the highest point of today's route. We started the descent and followed another detour to continue. Every time we see more children with their backpacks!

Descending from the most populated area, we find a kind of school and nursery, at which time all children begin to leave. Seeing both Westerners catches their attention and they do not hesitate to leave all their things and come to greet us. Without a doubt, it was a unique moment! See how your hand collides, play with you, some showing how strong they are, laugh and enjoy your company, is something that has no price. We have the feeling that we are very fortunate, although we do not doubt that they are happy children, and that, even if they have little, is worth a lot! Several photos surrounded by children and with Raúl and Irene, with whom we had a good time of laughter, surrounded by children of all ages! Another moment to remember!

We continue the route joining the rest of our companions, while we find another waterfall again! The area is beautiful and we are enjoying it a lot!

Again in populated area, we followed two detours to start the descent towards the river, at the bottom of the valley. The path is very wide, full of curves and has no loss.

We have already driven about 4 kilometers and reached the height of the road that goes to Sa Pa. We followed a couple of detours to leave quickly and continue descending towards the valley. The breadth of the landscape allows us to have a panorama of scandal!

We continue descending, between rice fields. This part will be the most pindia, paying attention to these last meters. The road is muddy and has a steep slope. However, it is a short stretch, so we quickly complete it, without major problems.

We reach the height of the river, which we must cross along a curious suspension bridge! Another moment to remember! The river is wide and plentiful, and the bridge has its length meters. Here we go!

After crossing the bridge, we follow a detour to the right to continue along the left bank of the river. The path is wet and narrow, but it has no difficulty, so we are moving forward without problems.

We completed the first steps along the river and reached an area of rice fields, where we followed a detour to approach the waterfall Cau May Waterfall, very close now.

Several more meters and we arrived at Cau May Waterfall, waterfall that we accessed by crossing a somewhat improvised bridge. In the vicinity of the waterfall, there is a kind of shop and restaurant where you can eat or drink something. Cau May Waterfall is ideal for a swim, has several pools and a waterfall. We do not hesitate to take a break, some bathe, others put their feet in the water and others, simply, rest. The area is beautiful and the waterfall very beautiful, several meters high. It is noted that it is a place of passage for many tourists. Perhaps, Cau May Waterfall is one of the most frequented and visited places in the Valley of Sa Pa, and sure to stop all or almost all organized trekkings. To leave the area of the waterfall, we crossed another curious bridge!

We leave behind the Cau May Waterfall area and cross another beautiful bridge over the river, in order to continue our route. This area is very beautiful!

Already in the other margin of the river, we will go ascending, little by little, until arriving again at the height of the highway, where we would finalize the trekking. We passed through a more populated area and another waterfall.

We are facing the last section of the route. We continue gaining height, following a detour to the right and visiting another waterfall. The views towards Cau May Waterfall are beautiful!

Finally, after several more minutes of slight ascent, we arrive at Hầu Thào, at the height of the road that goes to Sa Pa. Here we finish the today's route and the trekking through Sa Pa. It will also be a refreshment point and a goodbye moment , since each one of us would have a different destiny. A van with several seats will take us back to Sa Pa, where we end our adventure in this beautiful valley. We said goodbye to all our colleagues, Álvaro and Andrea, Chilean travelers who are traveling around the world for a year and a half, and Raúl and Irene, with whom we would continue enjoying their company in Sa Pa, since we would spend one more night there .

CONCLUSION:

Another one of those days full of sensations! A second day of hot and demanding trekking, but full of moments to remember! Beautiful views of the Valley of Sa Pa, a beautiful bamboo forest, contact with local children full of unique moments, beautiful paths along the valley and Cau May Waterfall waterfall as a final climax. Spectacular!

CONCLUSION:

Sa Pa did not disappoint us, and not only did he not disappoint us, but he also provoked us two days of incredible sensations. Meeting the Hmong people, local life and custom, the difficulties and the little they have, makes you reconsider, or at least, know that we are very lucky. They were two exceptional days, with good weather, walking along beautiful paths. Forests, rice fields, beautiful views of the valley, waterfalls and moments to remember with some unbeatable companions. We were lucky to meet great people and that greatly enriched our stay in Sa Pa. A hard first day, with a day of many hours walking, but beautiful, a stay at Mao Lenh Family Homestay to remember and a second day full of emotions . Our most sincere thanks to Mao and Mu, in the first place, and to the rest of the comrades with whom we enjoyed the trip, for making our visit to Sa Pa two days that we will always remember!
