near Puerto de Santa Rosa, Guanajuato (Mexico)
A favourite 11 km loop hike with varied terrain, lake, creeks, waterfall, ruins, views and more. Noted as difficult only because of length and a number of trail intersections. The time didn’t seem to record right. This travel time is usually around four hours or slightly more for this route.
Trail leaves lake to follow creek.
Take trail to left.
Take trail leaving lookout heading up through trees to the left
Looking back across field from lookout.
Dirt road from here will take you back to Santa Rosa. Ruins are another hour following dirt road to left until further turn off.
Great views back towards the presa to the east.
Good sense of more rugged terrain found in this area.
Alternate rout back to the presa.
Instead of heading to ruins and this long loop, instead of heading back down the valley and creek, a good trail follows the hill well above the creek (to the left or north). This results in a wonderful 90 minute hike in this area with great views and interesting terrain.
Trail off dirt road to left.
It is possible continuing straight will also end up connecting further down the valley.
Large stone dam/presa.
Trail goes to right of dam
Both ways with work but left trail May be a little more direct.
Rose bush perhaps hundreds of years old
Not in pic but usually in July through early October.
Take trail to left across meadow
Possible ancient metate?
There are scratches on the sides that could indicate human activity. This immediate area could easily have been a temporary settlement…lots of water and meadows.
To the right is One of two good creek crossing spots.
Important intersection as trail crosses creek and joins main creek the runs south out of presa.
Cross creek to right
There is also a trail on left but crossing creek preferred.
Not trail summit but one of many around hear to climb
Optional route to left to follow west side of lake.
