near Roussillon, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (France)
Pleasent 3hr ramble through farming country and the Sentier des ocres (pay) add 50min to walk time for this because couldn't do or don't include on map? It was closed for coronavirus. Avoid hot days and busy high summer.
Start from one of parking at north end of village. Saint Michel is a big pay parking just below village. Go up hill back to village
Turn right 20m later away from main rd
Veer right at little junction
Roqd drops gently downhill
At edge of village is carpark on left and crossroads. Go straight following Rd to Gordes.
25m after end off village sign the Rd bends right. There are hiking signs on left at a little junction called ribas. Turn left off Rd here following sign to goult 7.8km
Rd turns to dirt track 20m later and forks. Go straight ahead along chemin de l'aurette
At grey gate 59m later is a walking track on left. Take this red and white gr trail
Lovely downhill walk through oak woodland
Cross wooden bridge and left along track follow gr signs
After few min come to minor Rd with walk signs. This is cabiscol. Follow sign left for pie conil
Rd climbs up gently. Strange eroded rock forms on right
U come to Rd junction signed pied conil. Turn right down Rd (not track which is private)
80m later turn left at sign for goult 6.3km down dirt track between villas
Track goes straight ahead for 1.7km passes lovely field of vines
Farmtrack trail leads through patches of woodland and past vine yards
Path continue downward past lavender fields. There are more yellow way markers than red and white
At bottom of Hill u reach a large stone peach pink traditional house. This is la petite verrerie. Go left here.
Rd goes uphill past a farm and vineyard. U can stop and buy a bottle for a picnic here
At d1609 (route de la pioche) go right (straight ahead). Vine yards stretch out ahead of you toward distant hilly ridges
Turn left off Rd here . It's signed Les Huguets. Following yellow and now also red-orange way markers uphill on bumpy tar road
Keep on small quiet Rd past more vineyards and into hamlet of Les Huguets
Go straight through village
There are some lovely pastel Mediterranean toned houses here with vines climbing up them.
At end of village turn left up d108 signed Roussillon 3.3km
120m after village just before sharp bend in Rd sign a small dirt road leads off north right signed Les Mas des Iris and Le Has. Follow this. Yellow way markers
Very quickly Rd hits a mixes template of light oak woodland and vine yards
Rd climbs uphill. This can be toughest part of walk on a hot day! But the oak trees provide some shade
After 5min road turns to farm track and levels out. Oak trees turn to pine and there's little shade
Me too of hill come to a gateway on right and house entry left go through gateway and at point where track bends around right (15m from fork) look for small turn off marked in faded yellow white on Boulder. Take this.
Path leads through rust red boulders and then through pine woodland
Trail drops steeply for 2min down to d149 rd
At Rd turn right signed Roussillon 1.2km
Carefully follow Rd through a residential area with mix of new housing and grand old villas
At mini roundabout at entry to Roussillon (kids playpark opp it and carpark) turn left into village
In village centre hang it right uphill to Sentier de l'ocre
Viewpoint with Fab views over village and in other direction over pine forests and plains. Info panels explain history of ochre and how the strange quarried landscape here was created
Entry to site which is added as an HR to this walk but is closed coz of no reason at all but coronavirus. How does it spread on cliff faces???
Head up street to pretty place de la mairie with the flower decked mairie
Then follow signs to church and belvedere (viewpoint)
View and info board at belvedere. After rtn to car via a cafe...
