Hike along Pu’u O’o trail on saddle road (not to be confused by the one at volcano national park. Moderate difficulty, with almost no elevation gain. But walking on hard lava so a bit demanding. One can alternatively come back turning left at the end of the trail and following the four wheel drive to the saddle road, and then walking about 2.2 km on the road back to the parking lot. We went back the same way we got in though, to avoid walking on the road, which can be dangerous. Nice little forests on the way, full of birds, interspersed with lava fields. In clear days, the imponent Maunakea and Maunaloa will be visible almost all the time.
