Night hike up Ijen mountain located in East Java, Indonesia. Part of the national park. Recommended to stay in the Banyuwangi area closest to the trailhead.
Famous for its blue fire phenomenon and is one of the two in the world. To catch the blue fire hikers need to go down to the sulphur mine from the top of the mountain, which means starting the hike at 1 AM. To catch the sunrise hikers can start at 3 AM. During the pandemic period the gate only opens at 3 AM.
The hike is difficult with high sloped trail after +/- 800m from the starting gate. Trail is also sandy thus it is more slippery during dry season.
Care should be taken when driving to the trailhead as the road gets smaller towards the teailhead and lighting is very limited.
The gate and the start of the trail up towards the top of the crater. Ensure readiness for the hike. Advisable to arrive at 1 AM for blue fire experience, and 3 AM for sunrise trail. Only sunrise trail during new normal period.
Local guides available. Please ask for rates. Entrance fees are IDR 10K/pax.
First of six posts towards the summit.
Last post before the summit. There is a canteen offering hot drinks and light snacks.
The lake at tip of crater. Still 1.3 Km up to the sunrise point from here. End point for trolley no trolley up.
