I prefer this route over the standard. Here are a few reasons why:
--We were the only hikers.
--Vistas are amazing compared to the standard route. Views of Washoe, Carson Valley, Reno, and Tahoe.
--Physically more demanding.
--It doesn't have so many boring parts. You are either route finding, enjoying the animal life, admiring the vistas, or delighting in the solitude.
On the way up we did a lot of bush whacking. However, on the way down we found the trail. We followed it all the back to the car without any bush whacking. I recommend following my return leg on this gps track. The trail forks about a mile from the trail head, keep to climbers right and you'll be on the summit in no time.
