near Villarreal de San Carlos, Extremadura (España)

Absolutely stunning walk that everyone needs to do with a camera.

This starts off in the little village (and by little, I mean little, its got only one bar, and one church, in Spain...) there are plenty of facilities though although must warn you that if you need to fill up on water, this will be the final drinking water fountain we seen on our entire walk.

You walk just off the road at times, which may not sound appealing, but it is a road with very few cars (we did this at the start of June) and it is still very quiet. Keep the camera out as the first bird we saw flying was the very endangered Black Stork / Ciguena Negra flying down the river so there's always something to see here.

Head across the bridge and go to your left, going underneath it and following the river, there's tables here for a snack and some bins, but no water fountain as mentioned before.

Word of warning going around the riverside though, a part of it, when we were there, had suffered from a small, rock landslide and had been submerged into the river itself, you'll have to improvise by walking around some trees for balance and very loose rocks for about 10 metres so watch your step, before getting back onto the path again, before it heads a few metres in land again.

Just before coming out onto the road, youll have a great spot for a sit down on some rocks and enjoy the sights of the vultures, eagles and other wildlife all around you. There's a few more look out points along the road, all of which are worth stopping off at, and getting out the camera, there are plenty of surprises to had.

Turn left off the road again to start walking up to the castle, its a short walk but steep, and completely worth it. If you can't be arsed with walking (it is tarmac, so its very easy) there is also a free bus for the lazy.

Take in the 360 degree views of Extremadura when you get to the top, sit down, and just enjoy your surroundings.

The walk downhill again is very relaxed, plenty of trees and a few points to look out onto the river again.

Highly enjoyable overall and would recommend to anyone who fancies a great day out.

So at this point, the path had been submerged into the water. Head to the left of that tree before finding the path again, but be careful with loose rock. The path does reappear and start heading inland again after about 10 metres.

Back on the path again at the waters edge.

That's a bar (the only bar in the village) on the left, with €2.30 for pints. You'll appreciate it on a warm day...
