The first 45 mins or so, until you get within sight of the reservoir is incredibly dull, following the GR131 along a road for a while before heading inland.
The Sunflower book follows the reservoir on the western side whereas I spotted a trail on the eastern side and chose to follow that instead, perfect excuse to cross the dam later.
The reservoir it turns out, even though it was nowhere near full, is s magnet for bird life and we saw a great variety of species: egrets, herons, coots, ruddy shell ducks, black winged stilts, a kestrel as well as gulls, probably the greatest diversity we've seen this trip. Looks like it's a popular destination for birders as there is also a hide on the eastern shore (locked) and s telescope by the dam.
Coming up off the dam on the western shore, we find that there is no real path to follow, rather we used wikiloc maps to stay on the 'path' whilst traversing tough ground. A kind of path subsequently becomes visible as you head up to Morro del Sol with amazing views, but very windy up there. We then followed the ridge and back to our starting point with some bonus donkeys spotted at the end.
Once you've done this walk, and if you have a car, you can continue on to Puerto Los Molinos where the water from the reservoir previously seen joins the sea. Nice quiet little fishing village with a glowing stream and more bird life
