Sunday, June 10, the day before we left for Croatia, we went for a walk without Izzy. Would then be 2 long days so doggie got a day of rest. We decided to walk to the top of the Matajur, a mountain on the border of Slovenia and Italy. We parked our car in a parking lot just before the village of Livek near the football field and started our walk here. We walked to the village and at the first house we turned right up the mountain. Soon it went up reasonably steeply through a narrow path through the woods.

After 1 kilometer we came to a church and a bit later through the village of Perati where we crossed the farmland. Here we walked to the left to the hamlet of Avsa. Just before the hamlet we turned right uphill. The sun was still nice even though there were more and more clouds floating in. We climbed a small 2.5 kilometers uphill through the woods before we came to an open stretch.

We continued to follow the signs to the Matajur. In some places the path was so badly indicated that we had to search hard to find the right direction. Often the path went over rocks and boulders which did not make walking easier.

After a little less than 1.5 kilometers we left the open section again and we walked through woods further up to the Matajur. Sometimes we had a nice view of the church at the top and sometimes it was completely in the clouds.

8 kilometers after our departure we arrived at the top of the Matajur at almost 1700 meters altitude and after some rest and some pictures, we walked down the other side. Here we followed the signs to Livek and the narrow path sometimes went down steeply,

More than 5 kilometers after the summit we once again lost the walking path where we decided to descend along the road. This choice turned out to be a serious miscalculation, which made sure that we walked about 5 kilometers. Yet it was a nice walk that is definitely worth it. All in all, we came to more than 20 kilometers and we had bridged 1000 meters of altitude difference.
