The Hike up La Soufriere Volcano starts at the Richmond Vale Academy building, basic accommodation and meals can be obtained here and it is a good starting point for the hike. First the hike descends to the sea, crosses a small stream and then goes inland through a dry river gully and ascends along a ridge, most of the trail has tree cover and good shade. However the last part of the trail has no shade. On approaching the top strong winds can be experienced as you are no longer sheltered on the leeward side of the island but exposed to the Atlantic Easterlies (Trade Winds). A steep climb down into the crater can be made with the help of rather old and poor quality ropes. Returning the same way back.
