near Vafés, Crete (Greece)

Take 2 hours of time and enjoy this excursion.
The kryonerida cave is approximately 15-20 minutes on foot from the village Vafes. The path is easy, on the trail you will find on the left another small cave (Kalamato cave), which is 30 m from the path with steps. Right from the path lies the chapel of St. John which was built into the rock. Arriving at the kryonerida cave you will find an ossuary with the bones of some of the victims killed during the Ottoman period when the women of the village hid in the cave to escape. "But the crying of a baby betrayed them to the Turks who put fire at the entrance of the cave and then closed the cave with a rock, 130 people died by suffocation. The entrance is very tide!
The entire path to the cave is gorgeous, rich vegetation, especially during the spring months. In summer it is a refreshing walk!

Krionerida cave (we visited the entrance room of the cave, see photos):
The cave Krionerida is located in the ravine Laggos, southwest of the village Vafes, at an altitude of 230m. The cave has no special speleological value, but it has enormous historical importance, as the residents of Vafes were killed here by the Turks in 1821. Indeed, the wider region of Krionerida was named so after this historic cave.

The entrance has a width of 1.8m and height 1.5m. It consists of four rooms, with the first being the larger, while the second contains the bones of the victims of the Turkish atrocity. The last room has a spring of water, after which the cave takes its name (kryonerida means a place with cool water in Greek).

Kalamato cave:
In the ravine of Laggos, except Krionerida cave, there is the cave of Kalamato, which is labyrinthine, with small booths, potholes, stalactites and stalagmites. The cave can be accessed only by experienced cavers.
