near Uchagyz, Hatay (Türkiye)
The area around Kaleüçağız, included in the via Likya, was saved from cementing thanks to the intervention of the ministry of the environment that declared it a protected area.
From Kaleüçağız we first pass the harbour and than we continue over a narrow asphalt road. We follow the white/red indications. After two and half km we pass the pleasure boats storage and not much later we see the Üçagiz Cemetery. Make sure to have a look at the Cemetery. If we keep right here we go to the Üçagiz Kekova Castle. Going there would be another excursion in itself. This walk focuses on natural beauty and not on cultural heritage so I have skipped this interesting detour. Therefore we turn left after the Cemetery. We have left the asphalt now and are walking on a dirt road. We pass an area of greenhouses. For almost three km we walk over a piece of more or less flat land with open areas and pieces of forest. At a certain point we see a castle on a hill. We than arrive at the smugglers inn. The smugglers inn can also be reached from the see and looks like a superb place to have some food and swim in the sea in the summer season.
At this time the inn was closed. So apparently there is only service in the summer time.
From here we continue close to the coast and we have beautiful views over the sea and the many islands in the area.
At 6,7 km from the beginning we leave the seaside and we start our climb. At this point the trail is signalled with blue dots.
This part is more difficult. The going is more difficult because of the many stones on the track and the trail is not always easy to find. Strangely the blue dots seem designated in a one-way direction. So in case we walk this part in the opposite direction we will have a hard time spotting the signals and the going gets cumbersome.
In respect to natural beauty this part is very exiting. There are very impressive rock formations.
After about 10 km we will pass a viewpoint that offers a view over Kekova.
We than continue to the main road and back to our initial parking place.
Some additional information:
The route is designed in a counter clockwise direction.
There are no picnic tables nor drinking water along the way.
The track is moderate from a technical point of view and the navigation requires some experience at some intervals.
