The Reserve, at the foot of Mount Hermon, in the Golan Heights, is one of Israel's most popular places for hiking. It is a place bathed in waterfalls and springs.

The area, in the middle of a lush forest, offers stunning views of Mount Hermon and the roaring Banias Waterfall, the highest in the country. This waterfall is surrounded by five caves that are the vestige of a temple built in honor of the mythical god Pan. There is also a shrine dedicated to Augustus, the Roman. It also contains the ruins of a city, founded long after the conquest of Alexander the Great, in the year 329 of this era.

Banias is one of the most beautiful nature reserves in Israel. Along the gorge that leads to the waterfall there is a wooden suspension bridge. The park has 4 very easy hiking trails. 3 of them last about 45 minutes and the fourth, 90 minutes.

Banias offers visitors all the elements that attract tourists: nature, archeology, history and religious significance.

THE FORTRESS OF NIMROD

The Nimrod Fortress is a medieval architecture fort located north of the Golan Heights, Israel, on a hill located 800 meters above sea level. It is named after a biblical hero, the hunter Nimrod (Genesis 10: 8-9) who, according to local tradition, lived at this summit.

The fortress looks towards the deep and narrow valley that separates Mount Hermon from the Golan Heights and towards the road that joins between Galilee and Damascus (now Syria).

It is believed that Nimrod's fortress was built approximately in 1229 to prevent any attempt by the armies of the sixth crusade against Damascus. It was called Qala'at al-Subeiba, "Castle of the Great Precipice" in Arabic.

During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries it changed hands several times, but was maintained and fortified mainly by Muslims, as evidenced by the numerous Arabic inscriptions that were found incorporated into the building ..

At the end of the thirteenth century, the fortress lost all strategic value due to the final defeat of the crossed states and the Muslim conquest of Acre and was abandoned.

The Ottomans conquered the area in 1517 and used the fortress as a luxury prison for the noble exiles in Palestine. That same century was definitively abandoned and remained as a stable for sheep herds in the region.

The castle was ruined as a result of an earthquake in the eighteenth century.
At the end of the 13th century, the Muslim conquest of the port of Acre over the Mediterranean meant the end of cross dominance in the Holy Land. Nimrod's strength lost its strategic value and deteriorated; The ruins still visible today provide a silent testimony of their past greatness.

The entire fortress complex is 420 meters long and 150 meters wide, and is constructed of large stone stones. The walls are reinforced by numerous rectangular and semicircular towers, crowned by roofs supported by cross vaults. On the east side of the fortress, the tallest, stood towering tribute tower of 65 by 45 meters, protected by other huge rectangular towers. The fortress dominates the deep and narrow valley that separates Mount Hermon from the rest of the Golan Heights, the road that joins Galilee and Damascus, and the old crossed city of Banias.

THE ROUTE:

After seeing the waterfalls and pools that form the Banías River, we will arrive at a palace complex from the 1st century AD. C. built by Herod's grandson, Agrippa II. From here we will climb a forest of oaks, bananas, fig trees and carob trees towards the archaeological remains of the impressive Muslim fortress of the thirteenth century that stands on a long and narrow boulder.
