near Pont Sticill, Wales (United Kingdom)

Why worthwhile? A gorgeous waterfall and several cascades hidden in a small forest valley in the middle of the Brecon Beacons.

Starting point: Parking lot near the bridge crossing the Caerfanell River, which can be reached from the AS470 / Merthyr Tydfill towards “Mountain Railway” (road signs). We pass it, and then pass “Pontsticill Reservoir” and Pentwyn Reservoir (follow road signs to “Talybont”). At the following exit we go right and go past The Old Barn Tea Room. Once we reach the uplands de road descend a lot and you reach the parking lot. [Merthyr Tydfil, Brecon Beacons – Wales]

Time: ¾ hour

Difficulty Rating: 1

Details: Wooded area in the mountains of the Brecon Beacons. Good (forest) paths. Watch out for slippery stones near the waterfall.

Route description:

From the little parking lot we walk, ascending lightly, straight into the words. Passing moss covered stone walls and crossing a small bridge. At a fork in the road a little further on we take a right and descend steeply, through a gate and towards a bridge across the Caerfanell river. At the bridge you have a nice view of the Blaen-y-glyn waterfall. Right before the bridge you van take a path to the left across stones to continue upstream to get closer to the waterfall. Be careful: wet and slippery stones! Once we cross the bridge we go right and follow the river downstream. From here the route is easy to follow: keep following the (cascades of the) river and you’ll eventually reach the road to the parking lot. Once you reach the road you climb across a wooden stair (“kissing-gate”) and take a right back to the parking lot.

Done in 2014.
