UNITED STATES - NEW JERSEY / NEW YORK - Palisades Interstate Park. Long Path - From Lamont Campus (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory), next to the dividing line of the states of New Jersey and New York), to GW Bridge Bus Terminal, near the subway station located at W 178th Street

⇒ Link to the next stage: UNITED STATES - NEW YORK. Long Path - Stage 2 - From Upper Nyack to Blauvelt State Park, Tallman Mountain and NY / NJ State Line

Tour through the southernmost section of the Long Path , a long-distance path that runs from New York City (George Washington Bridge) to the north end of the John Boyd Thacher State Park in Altamont, near Albany, the state capital from New York. The entire trail is 357 miles (575 kilometers) long, distributed in approximately 35 stages , with an extension to the north, to the interior of Adirondack Park .

We had traveled this same itinerary already in the middle of winter, in January 2015, in the opposite direction, although on that occasion the GPS errors offered a rather distorted stage profile (see UNITED STATES - NEW JERSEY / NEW YORK. LONG PATH - Stage 1 - George Washington Bridge - Fort Lee, to NY / NJ State Line ).

Although technology has evolved in these years and GPS and applications are more precise, it is still difficult to correctly record the altitude of the route on a bridge of the characteristics of the George Washington Bridge , and as much as one tries, the coordinates inevitably refer to the river level, even if you walk more than 60 meters high, hence the itinerary summary erroneously indicates that the minimum altitude of the route is 0.

Views of the George Washington Bridge and Manhattan

Although the excellent marking of the trail, with aquamarine markers (aqua blaze) officially begins and ends in the
Fort Lee Historic Park , the section also includes the crossing on foot of the spectacular George Washington Bridge (GWB), and runs almost exclusively through the Palisades Interstate Park , along the narrow strip of forest between the Palisades Interstate Parkway and the edge of the formidable Rocky cliff of The Palisades, on the west bank of the Hudson River, offering magnificent views of the river and its rugged and lush west bank, as well as the east bank and Manhattan.

Although the annoying noise of the cars on the neighboring highway prevents full enjoyment of the natural environment, the place is worthwhile, and for its proximity to New York City and good communications, it is undoubtedly an important reference for the practice of hiking in this urban area.

To get from Manhattan to the starting point of the march, using public transport, the best option is to take the 9A or 9AT bus , which leaves the GW Bridge Bus Terminal (between the subway stations located at W 178th Street and 181th Street) , and also from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (at 625 8th Ave). There is a stop at the very beginning of the itinerary, at Lamont Campus (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory), right on the borderline between the states of New York and New Jersey. Cost of the trip: between 8 and 11 dollars, approximately, depending on the terminal chosen. The ticket can be purchased on the same bus or at the station.

A careful and detailed description of this section can be found on the official website of the NY-NJ Trail Conference .
