near Sabinosa, Canarias (España)

Starts by the Sanctuary of the Virgins chapel, passes some historic caves (which seem to be actively used as shelter by travelers), passes through desolate farmland to the cliff edge with great views of the north coast of El Hierro, continues down to the dry windswept juniper forest and the big daddy “El Sabinar”, and closes the loop back to the car park.

Caves of Caracol

A bunch of natural and artificial caves. Includes an information board describing the use of the caves by the island’s native tribespeople, and how each shepherd identifies their flock. It seems that people (hikers?) actually sleep here as there were some sleeping bags, candles and other gear. Quite clean and sheltered.

Crossroads

More parking, and where you can choose to go directly to El Sabinal or make a loop using Camino de Sabinosa.

Another crossroads

We turn left to stay on Camino de Sabinosa.

The road to El Sabinar (PR 9)

If you go 30m pst the signpost, you can see a great view down the north coast of the island.
Photo

View along the north coast

Walk a bit down the trail to see the view. Turn around to head back to the loop track.

Valley path

The road and steps end, but the marked path continues through the field next to the trees.

Road to Mirador de Basco

Mirador del Basco

It’s closed in January 2018! Maybe it will open again at some point? But possibly not as it seems the cliff is falling down. You can cut down from here to El Sabinar.

Cut the corner

Cut across the field to the path, instead of walking around the road.
