Spectacular trail - we started the day with a scrumptious energy filling breakfast at Josephine then we headed to the trail: direction Montenvers Mer de Glace through Caillet. The trail is well sign posted and starts next to the Montenvers train station which is located right behind the main train station of Chamonix.
The ascent was almost 1000 meters from Chamonix to Montenvers - Mer de Glace. Breath taking views across the way as you conquer the forest. It took me around 3:30 hours while it says 2.5 hours .. I won’t blame it on bad instructions rather on a slower than average feet like mine and a slippery rocky surface! I scored the trail as moderate as you are constantly climbing up in the forest over wet rocks which added technical challenges to the ascent.
As we got closer, patches of fresh snow started to make appearance on the trail, this is when you know you are up up there! When we arrived, we got welcomed by the stunning white peaks standing proud around la Mer de Glace, which made the hike up well worth every breath. If you don’t have any time, Legs or lungs left to make the long descent, you can take the train down back to Chamonix, which is a bit of a cheat but that will be my aim for next time - a full round trip! I know my brother will be chuffed for using his hiking poles that he took up to Kilimanjaro! On the way back to Chamonix we crowned the spectacular day with a pint of Guinness and a warm cappuccino! That’s what I call the perfect day!
