Carr Lake campground to the Grouse Ridge Lookout with a few side trips. Lots of lakes and ponds to visit and nice vistas. We did not find an official trail to Long Lake, but the short walk across open granite takes you to a very pretty little lake. There were hiking trails leading from Milk lake to the lookout trail and they would not be as steep as the scramble we took. The lookout building was under construction. Check out the remains of an outhouse on the point below the look out that had a great view. There is a real bathroom not too far in from the Carr Lake trail head. The road into Carr Lake does not require four wheel drive or a high clearance vehicle but is rough and rocky in places.

Very nice area and good views once you are up on Grouse Ridge fire lookout.

We parked at Grouse Ridge Campground TH, and hiked to Long Lake. Snow is still in some blankets here and there (third week of June 2016). Black flies everywhere, but wildflowers were blooming in colorful splashes everywhere! From the lookout we could see Mt Shasta on day 1 in but on our way out everything was obscured by heavy grey smoke from a Foresthill fire. The old outhouse at the lookout is gone (http://peachyhiker.blogspot.com/2012/07/grouse-ridge-donner-area-7-2012.html ) has an image of it, quite full of character! One thing to be aware of is the high volume of hikers and backpackers in the area. 35-40 passed our camp at Long Lake. I had forgotten how much elevation change you do and regret taking a newbie backpacker on this trip (or at least from the lookout trail head) for that reason. The fun is all of the lakes and all of the choices of places to go and things to see and do. Swimming is great. Fishing is sometimes good. We saw eagles fishing successfully at Island Lake.
