near Castañares, Castilla y León (España)

This track wants to be a guide for pilgrims who enter the city via Castañares and cross Burgos city through Camino de Santiago. Athough it is not the official route, we recommend this itinerary. To follow the official path, you should go into the town via Villafría - see our track Camino de Santiago - Burgos Ciudad (Ruta I).
We depart from Castañares and pass through La Ventilla and Capiscol boroughs with lots of factories and industrial units on both sides, which make this part of the itinerary very tedious. As soon as we arrive in Burgos, we will be caught by a monument dedicated to pilgrims: The Pilgrim´s Fountain . Continuing via La Constitución Avenue, we will get to Las Calzadas Street, which is said to be the door to one of the most exciting walks you can enjoy in the world. See photos below to find out all the breathtaking monuments you will bump into in your way through the city: Las Bernardas Monastery, San Juan Monastery, San Lesmes Church, San Juan Arch, Castilfalé Palace, Cathedral, Fernan González Arch, El Cid Ancestral Home, San Martín Arch. Just before arriving at the Cathedral, you will find the Pilgrims´ inn where lodging is available and assistance also provided.
We leave the old town through the Arch of San Martin and continue through El Emperador Street and Villalón Street. We cross Malatos Bridge over the Arlanzón River and will look for El Rey Hospital, where pilgrims used to be assisted and where the Chancellor´s office is at present. Very close to the main offices of university, It is worth visiting The Sanctuary of San Amaro, patron saint of pilgrims.
It´s time to enjoy the university campus and to walk off the city. Have a good way -"buen camino"- to Santiago and hope you have had a wonderful time in this amazing, wonderful and welcoming city.
