Ivan Rilski was born in the village of Skrino in 876 and was a pastor until his 25th birthday. After the death of his parents, he gave away all his material possessions and entered a monastery where he began his religious journey.

Juan de Rila was the first Bulgarian hermit. He was revered as a saint while he was still alive. His followers founded many churches in his honor, including the famous Rila monastery.

The legend that surrounds it speaks of wild animals that approached him freely and birds that landed in his hands. St. Ivan Rilski was against killing animals. In modern terms, we can say that he was a vegetarian. Love and respect for all God's creatures were among the values he transmitted to his followers. Years later, when one of the bishops of the Rila monastery announced that this would no longer be followed, the spring dried up for a week. This was the first and last time this happened.

THE ROUTE:

The cave in which St. Ivan Rilski spent more than 7 years of his life is only 3-4 km from the Rila Monastery. Pass the monastery parking lot and continue for another 3-4 km, you will see a large wooden icon on the left side of the road.

From here we continue walking through the forest for about 15 minutes until we reach a small church, this was the first monastery built by the monk's disciples.

On the right side of this church you reach the cave, stone stairs that take you inside. Inside the cave, there is nothing spectacular, there is hardly any light, and the stone "bed" does not seem tempting at all.

At the end of Ivan Rilski's small cave, you can see a thin beam of light. It comes from a narrow two-meter tunnel that ends at the top of the cave. The legend says that only people with clean souls can pass and that magical powers keep sinners away. If you pass, drink from the nearby fountain, make a wish, write it down on a small note and place it among the rocks of the forest, the legend says that, from time to time, St. Ivan Rilski returns to his grave and grants the wishes of some of us.

There is magic in this forest.

After visiting the small church, the cave and writing the wishes, we follow a small path through this magic forest until we reach another small monastery and from there to the road.
