Classic of the Norwegian classics. Essential to come to this country and not miss one of the most published images in all travel guides along with the Preikestolen.
After our two-day tour of the Rondane National Park, we went to Gjendesheim, on the eastern edge of the Jotunheimen National Park and next to the huge Gjende lake. We will go from the north, traveling the National Tourist Route of Valdresflye through the RV51 in a southerly direction bordering beautiful lakes until we find the detour to the right that indicates our destination just 2 km further. We will leave the car in the parking lot above the lake and from there we will see a path that climbs initially up some stairs and ascends quickly through the T2 Pth Gjendesheim-Besseggen-Memurubu towards the north. As we gain altitude the view over the endless Gjende Lake becomes more and more spectacular.
After just a mile and a half, the road bifurcates in two directions, taking the detour to the left that is already entering on rock and that will mean some easy climbing. We will find a small waterfall that will supply us with fresh water and we will ford on the right, continuing with a brief climb until finally reaching the upper plateau of the massif. We will go along the ridge towards the west absorbed with the view of the lakes Gjende on the left, the Bessvatnet on the right, and the huge snow-covered mounds of the national park in the background, until reaching the summit of the Veslfjellet, at 1743 m altitude.
After a brief pause to contemplate the fantastic view that this summit gives us, we continue west until we reach the crest of descent towards the confluence of the two lakes that surround us. Here we can contemplate one of the most visible and recognizable postcards of Norway, with lakes Gjende and Bessvatnet almost touching with the contrast of colors that characterizes them. Impressed by the beauty of the view we stayed a while contemplating it and taking photographs that immortalize this moment, and seeing the amount of people who are approaching in the opposite direction ascending the ridge towards me, we begin the descent with precautions due to the strong slope Of the same.
After an entertaining descent full of detours (easy), we reach the narrowest strip between the two lakes, bordering the Bessvatnet to the south. Here we will stop to eat something to gather strength, and continue to the west making a short climb and ascending to the next lake, the Bjønbøltjønne, under the shadow of the Surtingssui 2368m altitude. We will continue passing a small and coquettish lake, and after a couple of kilometers the road turns to the left and descends strongly between vegetation to the refuge of Memurubu, on the edge of the lake. From here it is only near the pier where the ferry will take us back across the lake to Gjendesheim, ending this wonderful route.
