near Berwick-Upon-Tweed, England (United Kingdom)
Start from old bridge (or from rail station). This route follows easy public footpaths for way out but route back is along Permissive Paths, not marked on OS map, some of which are not well-trodden. So boots, trousers and a stick to beat back nettles are essential! Only one section of about 100m, halfway up Halidon Hill is really overgrown, you just have to beat a path through, it is not too bad. See the ** straight on. indistinct path ** waypoint.
Distance was measured as 9.45 miles but nearer 10 miles since I had to turn GPS off in some parts to save battery.
.... unless you want a shortcut up the road to battlefield
Through gate and bear diagonally left
It looks like there is no path here but there is! Just head straight on, towards the rowan trees. You will need trousers and a stick here to beat the nettles! It is only bad for about 100m, then through a gate it opens up into a small valley
Head straight across the small valley to the gate opposite.
NOTE: GPS was off here, so does map not show actual route. Keep to track.
NOTE: GPS was off here, so does map not show actual route. Take track up hill on left
Turn LEFT at bottom of field. After short distance cross road and take footpath downhill. Take sharp right turn than a sharp left at trees and proceed straight to road. Turn left at road and walk on road to meet A1. Cross A1 and take footpath down embankment. climb fence and head diagonally right until you find way through onto lane, by a metal gate. Turn left then immediately right down footpath to river. At river turn left to return to old bridge
