9/9 ROTA VICENTINA - Vila do Bispo a Cabo de S. Vicente

Rota Vicentina is a network of walking trails in Sw Portugal, totalling 400 Km. It comprises the Historical Way, the Fishermen’s Trail and several Circular Routes. The recommended season to do these trails is from September till June.


Running along the coastline, the Fishermen’s Trail follows the trails used by locals to get to the beaches and hot fishing spots. It totalizes 120 Km along the cliffs, with plenty of sand, which can only be done on foot.


The Historical Way is a classic Grand Route (GR) that runs through the main towns and villages in a rural itinerary with several centuries of history. It totalizes 230 Km fully accessible to hikers and mountain bikers.
In February 2016, the Historical Way was certified by the European wide label “Leading Quality Trails – Best Europe”.

On our last walk along the Vicentine Coast we followed the Historical Way and the Fisherman's Trail.
We walked along a dirt road until we reach the beach of Telheiro. From there the difficulty of the terrain increased considerably. It was a long descent through a narrow and stony path and, finally, we had to go down by a wooden ladder. Then he had to climb the hill. The cairns (human-made piles of stones) were our guides. When we thought that the worst was behind us, the trail leads us through a hard and stony ground. These were undoubtedly the most difficult 500 meters of the entire Rota Vicentina.
We reached the southwestern point of Europe – Cape St. Vincent! This is a very touristy place and different from what we were expecting.

Rota Vicentina é uma rede the percursos pedestres no Sw de Portugal, totalizando 400 Km. É formada pelo Caminho Histórico, pelo Trilho dos Pescadores e por vários Percursos Circulares. Estes trilhos deverão ser percorridos preferencialmente entre os meses de Setembro e Junho.


O Caminho Histórico trata-se de uma clássica Grande Rota (GR) que percorre as principais vilas e aldeias num itinerário rural com vários séculos de história. São 230 Km totalmente percorríveis a pé e de BTT.
Em Fevereiro de 2016, o Caminho Histórico foi distinguido com a Certificação Europeia “Leading Quality Trails – Best Europe”.


Sempre junto à costa, o Trilho dos Pescadores segue os caminhos usados pelos locais para acesso às praias e locais de pesca. Com um total de 120 Km ao longo das falésias, com muita areia, que podem ser apenas percorridos a pé.

Para terminar a nossa caminhada ao longo da Costa Vicentina, nesta última etapa seguimos pelo Caminho Histórico e pelo Trilho dos Pescadores.
Caminhámos ao longo de um estradão em terra batida até nos aproximarmos da praia do Telheiro. Foi a partir daqui que a dificuldade do terreno aumentou consideravelmente. Foi uma longa descida por um carreiro estreito e pedregoso e, por fim, por uma escada de madeira. Em seguida foi preciso subir. As mariolas (montes de pedras) foram as nossas guias. Quando pensámos que o pior estava para trás, eis que o trilho nos leva por um terreno duro e pedregoso. Estes foram, sem dúvida, os 500 metros mais difíceis de toda a Rota Vicentina.
Chegámos ao ponto mais a Sudoeste da Europa – o Cabo de São Vicente! Este é um sítio bastante turístico e diferente do que estávamos à espera.
