Tour through section 14.2 of the Appalachian Trail , passing through the state of Pennsylvania (United States), from south to north, from the Deer Lick Run Shelters, to the Rocky Mountain Shelters, all of it inside the immense Michaux State Forest.

During the first two miles of the stage, the path gradually descends, until reaching the east branch (East Branch) of Antietam Creek, on whose shore is the interesting shelter Antietam Shelter. A short distance from the refuge is the Old Forge Picnic Grounds, with picnic space and drinking water supply, in a tap located on the side of a house, at the entrance to the park (as you arrive from the AT).

A little more than a mile away, and already at the beginning of the ascent to Buzzard Peak (1,946), we found another two shelters, the Tumbling Run Shelters, built in 1988 and 1989, and also a short distance from them, in a detour lateral, a cabin managed by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC), the Hermitage Cabin, which is offered prior rental.

Almost on the very top of Buzzard Peak, a side trail with blue markers leads us to Chimney Rocks (1,940 feet), with a magnificent panoramic view towards Green Ridge and the Waynesboro Reservoir.

From this point, we walk about two more miles along the crest of the mountain, at an approximate height of 2,000 feet, then descend very gradually down the slope of Snowy Mountain and Rocky Mountain (1,853 feet), on whose ridge they meet. two twin refuges, the Rocky Mountain Shelters, also built in 1988 and 1989, where we stayed overnight.

The shelters have a latrine; iron box to protect the food, from the bears; rings of fire; small grill; and a water source located 0.1 mile down the mountain, almost next to the PA-233 route. The surface spring may be dry at some times of the year, but there is a wooden trapdoor, octagonal on the ground, that covers a small well, where water could also be found (always to filter, of course). ).
