⇒ Link to the next stage: 88 - APPALACHIAN TRAIL - PENNSYLVANIA - Section 14.2 - From Deer Lick Run Shelters to Rocky Mountain Shelters

Tour through sections 2 and 1 of the Appalachian Trail on its way through the state of Maryland (United States), and through section 14.3 of the AT in the state of Pennsylvania.

The route follows the direction from south to north, from mile AT 1.054,5 to mile 1,069.0 measured from Springer, Georgia.

Long stage, with the added difficulty of having to make a provisioning ladder in Pen Mar, a town located on the border between Maryland and Pennsylvania, and that is not specially conditioned for this purpose, since the few shops, restaurants and existing services, They are at a considerable distance from the path.

We begin the route through the crest of South Mountain, with several ups and downs, reaching a higher level of the trail in the state of Maryland (1,980 feet) at the height of Quirauk Mountain, where the point known as High Rock, a splendid cornice with spectacular panoramic views, but unfortunately, the concrete base that still remains, belonging to an old building, has joined the activity of street vandalism, with many graffiti, which give the site a marginal air and very degraded, perhaps because of the ease of access to it by road.

Continuing the path to Pennsylvania, we find Pen Mar County Park, located on a promontory before reaching the historic Mason-Dison line dividing the states of Maryland and Pennsylvania.

The Pen Mar County Park, has facilities for picnic, services, playground, and an impressive viewpoint to the west, although some of these services only work during the summer season.

Although the path passes through the town of Pen Mar, this is not a town well conditioned to obtain supplies for the route. The existing establishments are not close to the TA, and there are no means of public transport, so if you have to buy something, there is no solution but to make a trip on foot to one of these few places where you can get supplies.

After crossing the historic Mason Dixon Lane, dividing between the states of Maryland and Pennsylvania, and Falls Creek, the trail begins a rapid ascent to Buena Vista Road, and then to Old Route 16.

Shortly after we crossed the SR-16 and after a small climb and later a more or less flat area, we reached the Deer Lick Shelters.
