Stage 64

Route along the Appalachian Trail , passing through the state of Virginia (United States), going south to north, from the Wilson Creek Shelter to Bearwallow Gap, at the intersection of the trail with the VA route -43.

The entire stage runs inside the George Washington Jefferson National Forest, along the Blue Ridge, and in many sections parallel or very close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and its layout corresponds to sections 27.1 and 26, according to the Official distribution of the stages of the Appalachian Trail, throughout the state of Virginia.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is an important mountain road (the longest route in the United States, with 755 km in length). Its construction began in 1935, with the denomination of "scenic route of the Appalachians", and the firm and layout of this route are excellent. Originally it was conceived to join the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, in Carolina of the North / Tennessee, with the Shenandoah National Park, in Virginia.

Currently, although Shenandoah National Park also has its own mountain road (Skyline Drive), which begins at the point where the Blue Mountain Parkway ends, the management of both routes is completely independent.

The day started very early. The unpleasant night before, with wind and low temperatures, did not invite to prolong even a minute the stay in the very little protected Wilson Creek Shelter.

The first three and a half kilometers of the route, with a very modest 500-foot climb (the only relatively significant climb of the stage), were barely noticeable, and one could say that they went unnoticed, with very few "emotions".

However, from the Black Horse Gap, where the trail approaches and intermittently intercepts the Blue Ridge Parkway, the spectacular lookouts follow, towards the north and south of the mountain ridge, highlighting the panoramic views offered by Taylors Mountain Overlook (2,365 feet), the Montvale Overlook (2,456 feet), the Great Valley Overlook and Harveys Knob Overlook (2,540 feet), Peaks Of Otter Overlook (2,354 feet) and Mills Gap Overlook (2,448 feet).

In all these places, in addition to magnificent viewpoints with clear views, there is a large parking lot, trash bins, information indicators, a picnic table and other services.

These viewpoints and parking areas are used not only by the thousands of motorists who travel the Blue Ridge Parkway to enjoy its privileged views, but also by many hikers who use them as a base for the tours through the Appalachian Trail and other nearby trails .

There are so many points that this route offers to enjoy excellent panoramic views, that you get to lose the emotion for the landscape that you discover us.

Entertained with the presence of the Blue Ridge Parkway and its viewpoints, the stage runs easily and quickly, and without even realizing it, we are already descending towards the Bearwallow Gap, where the AT intercepts the route VA-43, end of the day .
