Stage 6

⇐ Link to the previous stage: 5 - APPALACHIAN TRAIL - GEORGIA - Sections 14 and 13.2 - From Neel Gap / Walasi-Yi Center to Levelland Mountain and Low Gap Shelter

Tour of the Appalachian Trail ( Appalachian Trail ), passing through the state of Georgia (United States), in a direction from south to north.

The section covered corresponds to the first part of section 13, according to the official distribution of the stages of the trail, and is included between the Low Gap Shelter and the intersection of the AT with the route GA-75, in Unicoi Gap.

The day is cloudy, with a little fog in the early hours of the morning, and very cold. The weather forecast points to the possibility of freezing rain during the day. The trail is quite snowy, and the snow is freezing, especially in the less sunny hillside areas, which means using microspikes for a good part of the march.

The layout of most of the stage is relatively flat, at an altitude of close to 3,500 feet, although there is no lack of small and continuous ascents and descents. Much of the trail follows a wide forest road, and the climb to the summit of Blue Mountain (4,025 feet) is extremely gradual. One kilometer and a half before this summit, in a short lateral detour, is the cold and unwelcoming Blue Mountain Shelter, which due to its altitude and position is very exposed to the wind, which may be appreciated during the summer, but not on a day as cold and unpleasant as today.

The more than two kilometers of descent from Blue Mountain to Unicoi Gap are quite steep, and in some areas also rocky, which together with the snow and ice on its slope, requires extreme caution during the march.

At Unicoi Gap (2,949 ft), the Appalachian Trail crosses major routes 75 and 17, and has ample parking.
