Stage 55

Route along the Appalachian Trail (Appalachian Trail), passing through the state of Virginia (United States), in the area called Central Virginia, from south to north. From the bridge located on the banks of the mighty New River (in the town of Pearisburg, VA), to the Pine Swamp Branch Shelter.

The New River is a major tributary of the Kanawha River, which in turn empties into the Ohio River, and this into the vast and mighty Mississippi River, whose watershed is the largest in North America and the third in the world, after the Amazon and the Congo.

The stage corresponds to the second part of section 33 of the AT, according to the official distribution of stages of the Appalachian Trail, passing through Virginia, and in most of its route runs through the protected natural space of Peters Mountain Wilderness, which is part of the immense George Washington Jefferson National Forest.

The route begins in what is possibly the ugliest point of the entire Appalachian Trail, due to the presence of a large textile fiber production factory, owned by Hoechst Celanese, located on the banks of the New River, a few meters from the path.

As a discharge due to the unpleasant presence of the industrial complex, it should be noted that it is the largest employment center in the entire region, and that the company that owns it has made important economic contributions to maintain the Appalachian Trail, which has allowed other things, that the path was completely deviated in 2014, with a current path that quickly distances it from the factory, continuing eastwards, at a distance and from above, the course of one of the meanders that forms the river.

Shortly thereafter, the AT turns northward and climbs the Hemlock Ridge, before crossing the VA-641, Clendennin Road and Pocahontas Road, where a gradual climb up the Peters Mountain Ridge begins, with some rocky stretches and staggered.

When reaching the top with little trees and good pastures, at the point known as Rice Fields (3,383 feet) is a homonymous shelter (Rice Fields Shelter) that allows you to enjoy splendid panoramic views east and west of the ridge.
