Tour of the Appalachian Trail ( Appalachian Trail ), passing through the state of Tennessee (United States), from south to north, in the section corresponding to sections 2 and 1.2, according to the official route of the trail , between the intersection of this one with route 91, and the Abingdon Gap Shelter.

The route runs through the Cross Mountain and the Holston Mountain, bordering the fertile Shady Valley, on land of the immense Cherokee National Forest.

We found the snowy trail, with a couple of inches of fresh snow, but the temperature is good, and the sunny day. We did not need microspikes, much less snowshoes, since we have not found ice areas, and the path is tread on the frequent walk of walkers.

The first kilometer of the route is wheelchair accessible, with an unimpeded layout and appropriate pavement. It crosses agricultural or cattle lands, and allows to contemplate a magnificent panorama of the Shady Valley.

Shortly after the trail goes into the thicket of the Cross Mountain forest, in a gradual, but continuous climb to the Rich Knob (4,247 feet), in whose vicinity is the Double Springs Shelter, small shelter with concrete walls, which It will not happen precisely to history, neither for its aesthetics, nor for its state of conservation, which leave much to be desired. Of course it does not contribute much to this, the artistic expression of the graffiti artists who have left their mark on the place.

From this refuge, the trail descends slightly to the Locust Knob (4,012 feet) and, following the ridge of the Holston Mountain, with slopes and some views to the east and the west, it also goes in gradual descent to the Low Gap (3,384) feet), where the AT crosses route 421.

Starting at Low Gap, we follow the same ridge as the Holston Mountain, in short up and down sections that range between 3,500 feet and 4,000 feet, passing through the Double Spring Gap (3,530 feet), McQueen Knob (3,885 feet) and the McQueen Gap (3,653 feet). In between these last two points of reference, we are struck by a singular mini-refuge, strangely named as "Emergency Shelter", the first refuge built in the area, in 1934, located in the vicinity of the place that occupied a number of years ago. observation forest tower, of which only the remains of its foundations remain.

The stage concludes in the Abingdon Gap Shelter (3,773 feet), a small shelter built following the same aesthetic canons of the first, which allows a maximum of five occupants, and will not go down in history, neither for its beauty, nor for its comfort : no latrine, no boxes or cables for bears, and the water supply is about 400 meters away, downhill.
